3.) Report of the PDG chairs/vice chairs meeting on Friday, July 24, 2015 where preliminary 2015 symposia ideas were discussed – Ken Davenport, Vice Chair

4.) Special presentation (15 minutes) - Case Study: Rivet Leakers in Canned Soup - By John Ossmann, Portland, OR-based Customer Technical Service Representative, Silgan Containers

This illustrated presentation will address an actual case in which fractured rivets associated with easy open (pop top) cans led to can leaks and product spoilage, and how this problem was resolved.

5.) Group discussion of possible packaging related proposals for symposia, roundtables and workshops, etc. for the 2016 IAFP annual meeting, along with ideas for activities for this PDG for the coming year, including, but not limited to, webinars, webinar series, workshops, written materials, etc.

One idea to start, as a basis for, or component of, a symposium: “That’s [Not Just] a Wrap: Active and Re-Active Packaging for Food Safety and Quality” - Ken Davenport

Concept: Label and print technologies have advanced significantly over the last decade and will continue to evolve rapidly in the next few years.  Form label tags that track time and temperature, to in-package sensors of spoilage, to printed Radio Frequency ID (RFID) tags that introduce your food to the Internet of Things (IoT), the evolution of packaging opens up a world of opportunities for the food industry.  But not all is rainbows and unicorns for these advances – they often come at a price that is much greater than the cost of the materials. An overview of some of the advances and the unforeseen costs of implementation will be discussed as a stepping stone to discussions about risk and reward in advanced packaging and labeling.

6.) Group discussion of ways to increase PDG membership and any special programs of interest for the 2016 annual meeting agenda, such as a round table discussion with industry experts.

7.) Any other new business

8.) Adjourn at 3:00 p.m.

Recommendations from this PDG to the Board

1.) Please approve Ken Davenport as the new vice chair of the Food Packaging PDG to serve a one year, then to become chair at the annual meeting in 2016 for a two-year term.

Other recommendations to be determined.
