For many IAFP members who attend the Annual Meeting, it can be challenging to take advantage of all the onsite learning opportunities available. Thus, we are trying something novel this year – the IAFP Learning Labs. These Labs are meant to be short, content-rich sessions designed to foster audience participation and provide opportunities for practicing communication, interpersonal and team-building skills. We will be putting on two Learning Labs this year. One will be a “Food Safety Jeopardy” which is a fun, science-based twist on the classic TV game. Categories will include sanitation, foodborne outbreak trivia, food microbiology, IAFP history and more. The other Learning Lab will use a dice game to explain the differences between hazard, risk and outcome, and will help participants recognize the importance and meaning of uncertainty in risk-based approaches. Recent listeriosis/ice cream, salmonellosis/sushi and cyclosporiasis/cilantro outbreaks, have re-ignited the discussion of risk-based mitigation strategies to prevent foodborne outbreaks. Understanding key terms is important to develop robust microbial mitigation programs, yet people have difficulties understanding the differences between hazard, risk and outcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their smart phones for the latter Learning Lab. If you want a fast-paced, informal, and interactive learning experience, drop in on our two 30-minute Learning Labs!
